Exit of Samcheonpo Firepower Unit 1 and 2

Units 1 and 2 of the Samcheonpo Coal-fired Power Plant, which have been tainted by environmental pollution for 38 years, will exit.

Gyeongnam Environmental Group Welcome to Exit to Prevent Climate Crisis at Thermal Power Plant

Environmental groups of the Gyeongnam Environmental Movement Union said in a press release on the 29th, "Samcheonpo Units 1 and 2 will be closed on the 30th. "We are notorious as the main culprit of greenhouse gases and fine dust for 38 years and disappear into history," he said. "To stop coal-fired power plants right now is the way for all of us to live."

They explained the reason why they welcomed the closure of Samcheonpo 1 and 2 reactors, saying, "The coal-fired power generation accounted for 28 percent of domestic emissions that threaten human survival, making it the No. 1 target of eviction to prevent the climate crisis," adding, "It has been well over 30 years since the design life of coal-fired power plants stipulated by the government."

The environmental group said, "Two Goseong High coal-fired power plants, which have a process rate of more than 90 percent, will operate for the next 30 years with a total facility capacity of 2080MW," adding, "The new Goseong High power plant will continue to emit greenhouse gases as it operates in the future, which will make it more difficult for Korea to achieve its greenhouse gas reduction goal."

Starting with the shutdown of Samcheonpo Units 1 and 2, which will disappear as the back of history in May, the government and the National Assembly should also discuss the suspension of construction of seven new coal-fired power plants, including the Goseong Hi power plant, based on the carbon budget, they said.

"We need to draw up a roadmap and comprehensive plan to reduce the existing 60 coal-fired power plants to draw up an early exit," he said. "Stoping coal-fired power plants right now is the surest investment that we can all live and reduce social and economic costs."

The Gyeongnam Environmental Movement Group said, "We need to turn off all coal-fired power plants and convert them into 100% renewable energy," and argued, "We need to establish a system to cope with the climate crisis through huge investments in the agricultural and livestock sectors, transportation sectors, and ecosystem restoration."
