Transformation of Gunsan Shipbuilding Equipment and Materials Company to Renewable Energy

Establishment of a cooperative factory for processing and manufacturing such as offshore wind power substructure and solar energy structure


A project to convert the renewable energy industry of shipbuilding equipment companies in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, will begin in earnest.

North Jeolla Province and Gunsan City signed a business agreement to support the conversion of new and renewable energy businesses into new and renewable energy industries" at the meeting room of the North Jeolla Provincial Government on the 14th and strengthened their commitment to mutual cooperation for the conversion and growth of shipbuilding equipment and materials companies in the province."

Attending the signing ceremony were Song Ha-jin, governor of North Jeolla Province, Kang Im-joon, mayor of Gunsan, Kim Kwang-joong, chairman of the Gunsan Shipbuilding and Marine Technology Business Cooperative, Kwon Chang-ho, head of the North Jeolla regional headquarters of the Korea Land and Housing Corp., Lee Byung-pil, head of the North Jeolla Province Western branch of the Small and Medium Venture Business Corporation, and Kim Heung-chul, head of the North Jeolla regional headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.

Under the agreement, North Jeolla Province and Gunsan City will support the budget and various administrative matters necessary for the industry conversion project, while the Gunsan Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Business Cooperative will establish factories and equipment for the conversion of industries, develop wind substructure and solar floats, and create new jobs.

The Small and Medium Venture Business Promotion Corporation will be in charge of providing customized link support such as funding and human resources difficulties centers, while the Korea Land and Housing Corp. and the Korea Industrial Complex Corp. will be in charge of administrative support such as leasing and moving into the national industrial complex.

The project to support the conversion of new and renewable energy industries by shipbuilding equipment and materials companies is centered on the establishment of cooperative plants and equipment for processing and manufacturing offshore wind and solar structures in the Gunsan 2nd National Industrial Complex from this year to 2022.

It is analyzed that through the cooperative plant, the renewable energy industry will be activated based on the technology possessed by shipbuilding equipment and materials companies, and the employment inducement effect of about 320 related workers will occur.

Through the conversion of shipbuilding equipment and materials companies, it is expected that the synergy effect with the renewable energy business, which North Jeolla Province is strategically pushing for, will create a self-reliance and sustainable environment for local shipbuilding businesses.

Governor Song Ha-jin said, "We will be able to strengthen the self-sustaining power of companies by expanding our accumulated technological prowess and experience to the field of renewable energy structure production," and added, "We hope you will become a leader in the renewable energy industry in Korea and lead the North Jeolla economy to overcome the crisis and take a leap forward."

Gunsan Mayor Kang Im-joon promised support, saying, "The crisis is an opportunity and hope for a new start, and the Gunsan shipbuilding industry will become a new growth engine for industrial complexes linked to local industries by providing an opportunity for the leap of new industries through the conversion of renewable energy industries."
